WebM is a format of video files optimized for being played directly from online sources, inside web browsers, as it provides high video quality with minimal requirements (codec profile), and it supports HTML5. It is a highly-acclaimed format, mostly thanks to the fact that it is open-source, but also because it is based on the Matroska container which has already proven its qualities to the entire IT world. FreeWebMplayer is a very simple and lightweight tool that allows playing WebM files from local folders on your computer.
As mentioned above, FreeWebMplayer is not meant to play webM files directly from online sources. It is created to let you play already downloaded WebM video files. In my humble opinion, this is a noticeable disadvantage of this tool, as WebM files are meant to be played from online sources and not downloaded to the computer first. On the other hand, the fact that it can also load and play other video file formats, such as MPEG or MKV is a nice feature.
Anyway, the most important aspect of FreeWebMplayer is its simplicity. The interface only allows loading the file that you want to play, pausing or resuming the playback, or toggling between full-screen and window mode. There are no other options, settings or functions. That’s not exactly a good thing, because features such as the possibility to create and manage playlists are a must when it comes to video players. Furthermore, there are some minor glitches that make this tool feel like it’s a cheap, unfinished one. For example, the playback of a loaded video was sometimes performed in a separate window than the main window of the program until I toggled between full-screen and window mode.
Briefly, if you only want a very simple tool just to open and play WebM files, FreeWebMplayer could be a decent choice, especially since it is completely free. But if you want more features, you won't find them within this tool.
